Problem & my role

Education moved online. The tools hadn’t.

The advent of fast internet and the new normal brought by the Covid-19 pandemic showed the world new ways of engaging with content, and educational content is no different. Creators and educators everywhere were looking for ways to position themselves as innovative and meet the needs of the time.

Contentionary lets schools, faculties, educational centres and creators build a full, robust system to sell to and engage their students and subscribers.

  3. 03They upload course materials and set tests and exams.

  4. 04Learners take quizzes and join leagues.

Insights

What shaped the product.

01

Three customers, one platform.

Centres run academics and admin; creators sell and engage; learners want everything in one place.

So wegave each role its own dashboard on a shared system.
02

Educators arrive with lots of questions.

Creators and educators have a mix of needs and always a number of questions.

So westructured the website to answer as much as possible, with minimal need to get in touch.
03

Creators come to get paid.

Independent creators need to make their resources available and get paid.

So webuilt a wallet into the creator dashboard.
04

Learners stay for the community.

Learners want to be part of an active community of other learners.

So weadded quizzes, leagues and feedback to educators.
Key decisions

Give everyone their own front door.

1A dashboard for each roleEvidence · Insight 01
Options

One generic dashboard with permissions, or one shaped around each role.

Decision

Creator, centre, course and learner dashboards, each opening on the overview that role cares about.

Why

A centre managing exams and a learner joining a league have almost nothing in common on their first screen.

Trade-off

More screens to design and keep consistent, so shared parts (overview cards, sidebar, verify banner) repeat across them.

2A website that answers questions before they’re askedEvidence · Insight 02
Options

A short marketing page that pushes people to contact sales, or a fuller site.

Decision

A well-structured site giving as much useful information as possible, refined over several iterations.

Why

Educators have a mix of needs; answering them on the page means fewer people have to get in touch first.

Trade-off

A longer page, so structure and headings carry the weight.

3A wallet inside the creator dashboardEvidence · Insight 03
Options

Pay creators out off-platform, or let them see and move their money in the product.

Decision

A wallet with the balance up front, credit, wallet-to-wallet and wallet-to-bank transfers, and a filterable transaction history.

Why

Getting paid is why creators are there, so their earnings should be one click away.

Trade-off

Money movement adds statuses and edge cases (pending, cancelled) to design for.

Final design

Responsive, all the way through.

Reflection

My second edtech product.

  • Edtech still has room to move. It was my second edtech product, and it showed me the innovations that are still possible in the space.
  • Shipping isn’t the end. There are still improvements to make, and I’m no longer involved in development, but I’m sure the product owners are committed to its success.
